Blender Quicktip: From the Free Sketchup to Blender

A lot of people find Sketchup to be more intuitive and faster than Blender, and for a casual user this is certainly the case. And for a certain class of modeling problems, Sketchup really is the better tool. The trouble is, the free version doesn’t export to any file format Blender understands… or does it?
Humblefacture brings us the answer: Google Earth Format is actually a .zip archive.
Change the file extension of a Google Earth Format export from Sketchup to .zip, open it up, and you’ll find a .dae mesh file inside! This is a format Blender can import from the File -> Import menu.

Here is nice, easy to follow step-by-step on how to do the import. http://www.katsbits.com/htm/tutorials/sketchup_converting_import_kmz_blender.htm
Once in blender use ‘R’ to rotate your object and ‘N’ to scale.

Good thing I found this earlier on a different website! This is a GREAT tip for new users like I was…..

Actually, this is even easier than described above. In the currently available version of SketchUp, you can do a simple “File > Export > 3D Model…” from SketchUp to COLLADA. No need to fiddle with the kmz file unless you want to preserve geo-location in the model.
