Thing of the Week: Pressure Sensor!

thing_pressure

Okay, this is pretty spiffy.  The glow from this box comes from an LED that’s part of a beam-break sensor.  Little mechanical innovations like this really excite me.  Add this to the growing list of things like the electromagnet demispool added this week, which represent a pile of parts Thingiverse users will have in their toolkits when it comes time to make more complex projects.  Neat!

Really liked the pressure sensor… but have you seen QTC (Quantum Tunelling Composite)it’s a “Smart Material” it has the unique ability to smoothly change from an electrical insulator to a metal-like conductor when placed under pressure. While in an unstressed state the QTC material is a near-perfect insulator; with any form of deformation the material starts to conduct and with sufficient pressure metallic conductivity levels can be achieved…. maybe it could be the next step in developing this device? Have a look here.. http://www.peratech.com/qtcmaterial.php
